Blogging From Scratch: Newbies Finding Their Way Up
Over 220 million people worldwide have blogs, whether they use them for business or as a creative outlet, and four times that number read blogs regularly. Simply creating a URL and starting to write is not enough. You must make something that people will come back to among the millions of other blogs that are out there on the internet. It is necessary to focus and create content that will engage readers. There are some ways to ensure that your blog is the best it can be and has the chance for success.
Do Your Research
Before you begin writing, research what works and what does not. Read some very popular blogs – even some outside of the subject that you plan to write about. Take a look at the comments sections and see what people are saying about those blogs. When first starting out, it is a good idea to imitate what works. Once you get more adept, you can improve upon formats and techniques to make yourself more unique.
Establish Yourself
You need to establish your credibility right away. Anybody who gets on the internet can create a blog. Not everybody can write a good one. This is painfully evident when surfing through most of the blogosphere. You don’t have to have a doctorate in what you will be writing about, but you should know what you are doing and be able to show readers that you know. Being careful to avoid a tone of superiority, spell out your credentials in your profile area.
You don’t have to use your real name – most readers will assume that the name you give is a nom de plume, anyway. In your first post, repeat your credentials and declare your interest in the subject that you are writing on. Make it personal, telling a bit about yourself. The more you open up, the more readers will feel as if they know who you are.
Network with Other Bloggers
It is difficult to get anywhere, if you don’t network. Find popular and reasonably successful blogs that are similar to the one you are establishing and network with the people who write them. This is a wonderful way to pull in readers, both via links on their sites and by commenting on others’ blogs, and stay updated about what is going on in the blogging world. You can also perform some subtle advertising on social networking sites to get more people involved.
Keeping Content Fresh
Make sure that everything you write is high quality. Don’t get frustrated and post something just because you are tired of trying to make it better. Stay up to date on your area of expertise, but have fun writing about it, too. Stay consistent – post on a regular schedule and with pieces of writing that are configured similarly. By updating regularly, you will encourage readers to return because they know that not only will there be something fresh and new available, they know you are respectful of their loyalty.
