Diabetes type 2 is also known as Diabetes Mellitus, and has also been referred to non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and adult onset diabetes. Diabetes type 2 is a metabolic disorder characterized by a resistance to insulin, hyperglycemia, and a relative insulin deficiency. In most cases, engaging in exercise and modifying one’s nutritional intake is enough to manage diabetes type 2.

Recent years have seen a steep increase in cases of Diabetes type 2 especially in the United States, and there have been indications that much of the rest of the world is catching up in this same vein, especially in the coming years. The increase of Diabetes type 2 is so great, that the CDC is calling it an epidemic.

While Diabetes type 2 used to be more common in adults who had surpassed the age of forty, it is now becoming increasingly prevalent in adolescents and even children, likely because of the rising rates of obesity.

While it is not unheard of, ketoacidosis occurs much less often in Type 2 diabetes, though it is a popular occurrence in Type 1 diabetes. One effect that can occur because of type 2 diabetes is nonketonic hyperglycemia, which is very dangerous, though it requires a different treatment than type 1′s ketoacidosis.
